Puck originally started as a university newspaper comic way back in the prehistoric days of 1998. It was reborn in 2011, and is now running weekly, in color. You can see the original run of eighty strips AND the new colour strips all here!
Sometimes an idea pops into my head, and I think, “Heh. That would be funny.” I don’t think about the amount of work it would require to draw or any of the logistics in executing the strip. I only think about that stuff AFTER I’ve started and the suffering has begun.
So this is one of those times I bit off more than I could chew. The joke is a soft parody on a memorable scene from Empire Strikes Back. (I really have to stop the Star Wars references.) The concept just struck me as screamingly funny, and I had to do it. I cracked open my Empire Strikes Back storybook (publication date 1980) and got studying. I even included 2-1B, the medical droid from Hoth. Now THAT’S nerdy!
I really had to work at that reaction pic of Daphne in the last panel. It’s really hard to draw a picture that suggests someone is going to momentarily spit out what’s in her mouth but hasn’t quite gotten around to it. I think I succeeded.
This is SO bad. And so funny!
I'm not enough of a SW nerd to recognize the robot, but I like it. The only thing that'd make the 2nd panel better, IMHO, is if all the wall panels were rank upon rank of 1970s Mr. Coffee machines.
@Valley: The two techs behind the window are two original characters of a friend of mine. He begged me for a long time to include them. So I included them.
Sometimes I hate myself.
